On Sunday, September 27, the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation will hold its annual commemoration of the arrival of Kunta Kinte to the Annapolis docks. This ceremony has been held every year since 1987, recognizing the arrival of the Lord Ligonier, which sailed from the Gambia River on July 5, 1767, with 140 captured Gambians. It arrived in Annapolis, Maryland on September 29, 1767, with only 98 survivors. Haley believed one of those survivors was his Ancestral Elder, seventeen-year-old Kunta Kinte.

As shared in the novel and award-winning television drama, Roots, internationally renowned and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alex Haley documented Kunta Kinte’s arrival in
Annapolis and told the story of his ancestor’s challenges, legacy, and courage in overcoming obstacles while creating a new beginning.

The commemorative celebration honors the spirit of this new beginning and serves as a reminder of the contributions made by Kunta Kinte and other unnamed people in bondage. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of knowing your ancestral history, sharing family stories, and honoring family heritage.

The Annapolis City Dock Commemorative Ceremony occurs annually near the September 29^th arrival date. For 2026, the ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 27^th at 12 Noon. It will last approximately 30 minutes. The event draws politicians, community leaders, genealogists, historians, and local community members. Foundation members and friends actively participate in paying homage to the many who came before through the scattering of rose petals in the harbor. The Foundation invites those interested to join us at the Annapolis City Dock for this very important hallmark event.
